COMMENTS:

1. Our local amendment requires that duct smoke detectors be installed in the return duct of air distribution systems moving more than 2,000 CFM. Per Section 202 of the 2018 IMC, an air distribution system is defined as any system of ducts, plenums, and air-handling equipment that circulates air within a space or spaces and includes systems made up of one or more air-handling units. In this case, the air distribution system consists of both 2000 cfm units since both are circulating the air throughout the study room.

Additionally, Section 606.2.2 of the 2018 IMC states that where multiple air-handling systems share common supply or return air ducts or plenums with a combined design capacity greater than 2,000 CFM, the return air system shall be provided with smoke detectors in accordance with Section 606.2.1. Because the study room is being used as part of the return air path (functioning as a return plenum/duct), it is considered part of the air distribution system. Therefore, smoke detectors are required.

COMMENTS:

1. Section 1106.5 states scupper openings shall have a width that is equal to or greater than the circumference of a roof drain size for the same roof area. Based on the flow rate (51 gpm) shown on Sheet A4.0, a 3-inch roof drain would be required per Table 1106.2, which has an approximate circumference of 9.5 inches. Therefore, the scuppers should have a width of at least 9.5”. Reference: Section 1105.2, 2018 IPC
2. Overflow scuppers are missing from the east elevation view on Sheet A5.1. Also, show the secondary overflow system for the portion of the roof draining to the gutter, since the gutter appears to discharge to an interior drain. Reference: section 1108, IPC 2018
