The IECC defines an increase in the conditioned floor area of a building as an addition. As such, the addition must comply with the requirements of the current code. The addition alone or the addition plus the existing building may be evaluated for compliance. Alterations of an existing, non-conditioned building shall be brought into full compliance with the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code.
