05/18/2015 | LINZUNZA | DOT ENGINEERING | REVIEW | Denied | Date: May 14, 2015 PROJECT NAME: Valencia Road Extension: Houghton Road to Old Spanish Trail ACTIVITY NUMBER: T15PI00006 PROJECT REVIEWER: Esteban Tineo, PE, DOT Utility Review Section 1. The proposed strip-paved roadway section must include thickened edges. 2. The proposed drainage swales must include erosion protection measures. 3. Drainage Report detailing the proposed roadway drainage infrastructure must be submitted for review. 4. Since the proposed improvements (new Bridge crossing at Pantano Wash) will significantly alter the FEMA floodplain, a CLOMR and LOMR must be processed. 5. CMG Bridge Drainage Report a. Provide 500-year Bridge scour analysis b. Bridge Scour analysis must also include the 500-year Flood, or over-topping (whichever is less), in accordance to ADOT criteria. Moreover, pressure flow scour depths must also be added to the typical pier scour results for pressure flow conditions. c. It appears that the proposed pilot channel (upstream of the proposed Bridge) slope is not set to the Design Equilibrium Slope for sediment transport balance. Based on the proposed conditions mapping, the distance between cross section 16 and 9 is about 1200-feet, and per the HECRAS output, the difference in channel elevation is 13.01-feet ( 2879.00 - 2865.99 ), which works to a proposed pilot channel slope of 0.011-feet / feet. Since the proposed channel slope is not equal, but much steeper than the design equilibrium slope (Slope Channel Design = 0.011 > Equilibrium Slope = 0.0041), then the proposed channel is likely to erode both vertical and horizontally. Moreover, this may cause the upstream channel bend to break towards and possibly behind the proposed west channel soil cement. d. The report should show the proposed and existing floodplains. In addition, how will the existing wide floodplain be captured by the proposed pilot channel? e. Will the proposed pilot channel cross section maintain its integrity during flow events? Will this pilot channel need to be bank protected? f. The Bridge Scour analysis mentions the use of the City scour equation, but it does not use apply it correctly. The City sour equation (equation 6.3) includes a 1.3 factor that is multiplied to the aggregate scour values not 1.0. Revise. g. 100year Bridge Scour; Using both the Hydraulic Depth and Max Depth (16.63 and 17.8), and the other values provided, I calculated Pier Scour depths of 19.17-feet and 19.63-feet, but your calcs show 12.92-feet? Please check and revise. h. Provide the 500-year or overtopping scour analysis. |
