11/28/2011 ROBERT SHERRY PLUMBING-COMMERCIAL REVIEW Denied 1. Comment not resolved; a backflow preventer has a pressure drop only when the water is flowing. The static pressure downstream of the backflow preventer will be the same as the upstream pressure under static conditions. Provide an approved pressure reducing valve to control the water pressure. [Original comment: Show how the water pressure supply will be limited to less than 80 PSI (water pressure range given as 73 - 85 PSI). Reference: Section 608.2, UPC 2006.]
2. Comment not resolved. Clarify the water pressure calculations; without a diagram of the water distribution piping, the calculations cannot be followed. In addition, the site plan shows one water meter on the site - does it also serve the south building? How can mechanical equipment, with their continuous demands, be compared to the demand of a drinking fountain that is sporadically used (see Section A2.2, UPC 2006)? If you are basing your calculations on demand flow in individual branch pipes, you must be sure to use the correct demand curve to determine the flow; e.g. 17 fixture units in a flush valve system has a demand equal to about 33 GPM, not 13 GPM. [Original comment: One of the specified fixtures (Haws emergency eye/face wash) requires a minimum pressure greater than the 25-PSI used in the water pipe sizing calculations. Revise calculations as necessary. Reference: Section 608.1, UPC 2006. (Note also, that eye/face wash units are required to deliver a minimum of 3 GPM according to ANSI Standard Z358.1-2009.)]
3. Clarify the lift used in the calculations. The shortest building (the south building) on site is 20 feet high, the west infill is 51.5 feet tall, and the remainder of the buildings range from 22 feet to 37 feet tall. [Original comment: Verify that the static lift used in the water pressure calculations will provide adequate water service to the evaporative coolers located at the top of the 51'- 6"-foot tall building. Reference: Section 610.1, UPC 2006.]
4. Comment not resolved; the fixture connection schedule still shows the wash fountains counted as only 1 fixture unit each. [Original comment: Clarify the water fixture unit calculations; if 92 existing fixture units are to remain and 19 water fixture units are to be added, how does the total amount of water fixture units equal 88? In addition, a hand wash fountain is not 1 water fixture unit; see Table A-2 for either "washup, each set of faucets" or "washfountain, circular spray" for the correct figure.]
