11/09/2010 ROBERT SHERRY PLUMBING-COMMERCIAL REVIEW Denied 1. Comment not resolved; Section 413.1, UPC 2006 does not allow the water heater thermostat to provide scald protection for a lavatory. Show how the temperature of the hot water supply to the public lavatories is controlled. Reference: Section 413.1, UPC 2006 and Section 504.3, IECC 2006.
2. Comment not resolved; a reduced pressure principle backflow preventer does not function as a pressure reducing valve. Provide a pressure reducing valve for the water service. (According to Tucson Water, the water pressure for this address has a range of 80-87 PSI.) Reference: Section 608.2, UPC 2006.
3. Comment not resolved; the horizontal drainage pipe serving the new women's restroom requires an upper terminal cleanout. Provide upper terminal cleanouts on horizontal drainage pipes exceeding 5 feet in length (horizontal drain lines serving sinks require cleanouts regardless of length). Provide cleanouts sized per Section 707.11, UPC 2006. Reference: Section 707.4, UPC 2006.
11/09/2010 ROBERT SHERRY MECHANICAL-COMMERCIAL REVIEW Denied 1. Comment not resolved; the requirements of Section 503.2.1 specify the use of calculations based on the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals or other approved calculation methods using the design conditions for Pima County (< 4,000 feet). The specified amount of outside air for this activity will require over half of the existing unit's heating capacity and it is very likely that the manufacturer's listing information for the unit will restrict the amount of outside air it can accommodate at design cooling conditions. .Provide heating and cooling load calculations that justify the capacities of the heating and cooling equipment specified for the project. Reference: Section 503.2, IECC 2006 and Section 309.1, IMC 2006.
2. Comment not resolved; mechanical note 23 is ambiguous. The air supplied to the restrooms must be exhausted whenever air is being supplied to the restrooms. Provide information on the sequence of operation for the restroom exhaust fans to show that all of the air supplied to the restrooms will be exhausted. Reference: Section 403.2.1 (4), IMC 2006.
3. Comment not resolved. Construction documents shall clearly show that the proposed work complies with the relevant code sections; merely noting the code sections on the document is insufficient. Provide a design for the proposed Type I hood installation that clearly shows that the installation will comply with the requirements of Sections 302, 506, 507, and 508, IMC 2006 in addition to the hood comments that follow. Reference: Section 106.3.1, IMC 2006.
4. Comment not addressed. Revise the size of the grease duct to provide a minimum velocity of 1500 feet per minute. Reference: Section 506.3.4, IMC 2006, as amended by the City of Tucson.
5. Comment not resolved; if an enclosing shaft is to be used for the grease duct, design the shaft in compliance with the requirements of Section 506.3.10, IMC 2006. Provide design for the enclosing shaft for the grease duct. Reference: Sections 106.3.1 and 506.3.10, IMC 2006.
6. Comment not resolved; the submitted calculations neither address the requirements of Section 507.6, IMC 2006 nor do they address the point loading below the roof structure. Provide structural calculations to show that the Type I hood is supported from the building structure in accordance with Section 507.6, IMC 2006. Reference: Section 302.1, IMC 2006.
7. Comment not resolved. The gas range is a heavy-duty cooking appliance and a wall-mounted canopy hood for it requires 400 CFM of exhaust per linear foot of hood. The literature for the specified hood does not indicate that it has been tested in accordance with UL-710. Unless the proposed Type I kitchen hood has been factory-built and tested in accordance with UL 710, the minimum air flow rates shall conform to the requirements of Section 507.13, IMC 2006. Reference: Section 507.1, IMC 2006.
8. Comment no resolved; merely adding a note requiring that the make up air "comply with" the relevant code section is not acceptable. Provide a design that clearly shows that the make up air will not decreases the comfort in the kitchen. Clarify the termination of the make up air duct in the kitchen. If the make-up air is being introduced in a way that decreases the comfort in the kitchen, provide information to show that the make up air for the kitchen hood complies with Section 508.1.1, IMC 2006. (Note that some hood manufacturers require that HVAC diffusers be located at least ten feet from the hood to prevent disruption of the hood capture and containment.) Reference: Section 106.3.1, IMC 2006.
