The height of the guard is 3'-6" which is correct, however the top of the guard cannot act as the handrail because the top of the handrail needs to be between 34" and 38" [ANSI A117.1 1998 - Sec. 505.4]. q Handrail extensions need to be 12" plus one tread depth beyond the first riser at the bottom of the stairs [ANSI A117.1 1998 - Sec. 505.10.3] (the elevation does not show the additional tread depth extension).
