03/18/2003 | WILDAN | BUILDING-RESIDENTIAL | REVIEW | Denied | STRUCTURAL COMMENTS: Sheets G-4 to G-16 1. Each structural retaining wall or screen wall segment shall have the correct wall detail number marked on the plan wall length that is directly related to the structural design wall detail. Reference IBC Section 106.1.1. 2. Certain segments of the retaining wall footings are located in the storm water detention basins or in close proximity thereto. The geotechnical report is silent for the allowable soil bearing for retaining wall footings located near at or below freestanding water level. The geotechnical engineer shall review and clarify. Reference IBC Section 1802. 3. Lateral foundation footing movement to engage full passive pressure is much greater than that required to mobilize active lateral soil pressure. The geotechnical engineer shall provide appropriate analysis to identify the required magnitude of lateral movement to allow ultimate passive pressure to be safely used for the retaining wall design and or an allowable passive pressure to be used for safe structural analysis, required soils compaction and erosion protection, given the proposed slope conditions and water levels at or near the footing toe for various wall types. Reference IBC Sections 1604.4 and 1610.2. Sheet G-19 1. The grade at or near retaining walls shall be correctly represented on the wall type sections. The minimum set-back distance required from a descending grade break-line near the toe of a retaining wall footing toe shall be dimensioned on the drawing along with the maximum allowable descending slope gradient for that set-back. Design slopes ascending from or near the retaining wall type shall also be identified on the related wall type sections. Reference IBC Figure 1805.3.1 and City of Tucson Amendment H/3, or 1.5 times footing width, whichever is greater, not to exceed 40 feet. 2. Please identify the required total length of each wall type. Reference IBC Section 106. 3. When passive pressure resistance is used to calculate the design safety factor for the lateral stability of the walls, the soil placed on the toe side of the wall shall be specifically noted on the drawing as having been considered and included in the design for lateral stability of the walls. It shall be further noted on the drawing, that the toe soil in front of the footing and wall shall not be removed for any purpose except under the direction of a qualified and licensed engineer, since the toe soil is contributing to the safe lateral stability of the wall structures. The toe heel side of the footing shall be labeled. Reference IBC Sections 106.1.1 and 1604.4. Calculations 1. Please clarify retaining wall calculations to account for detention basin standing water levels. Reference IBC Section 1610.2. 2. Calculations shall be presented for all retaining walls and screen walls that measure more than 4 feet from the base of footing to the top of wall and all walls required to support a surcharge. Reference IBC Sections 105 and 106. 3. The derivation of design wind pressure and suctions on retaining walls and screen walls is incorrect. The procedure shown is for diaphragm buildings only. The correct procedure is as required by ASCE-7-1998. Please review and correct. Reference IBC Section 1609.1.1. 4. Please identify the design load combination procedure. A procedure that includes alternate basic load combinations requires the computed wind load to be multiplied by 1.3. Please review and clearly provide a statement identifying the design load combination procedure at the beginning of the calculations. Reference IBC Section 1605. 5. The calculations reference Section 3.20.3 of the "Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges" for highway surcharge. Please identify the author of that Standard and attach a copy of the relevant Standard sections to the calculations and identify the AASHTO design truck criteria in the calculations. Reference IBC Sections 106.1.1 and 1604.4. |
