Studies currently show parking lot trees struggle with minimum requirements, growing to half their height and averaging less than half their life expectancy. One of the goals of encouraging more canopy trees in parking lots is to mitigate urban heat radiation due to asphaltic paving. As the City becomes more urbanized, adding more impervious surfaces, our City has become an urban heat island. The urban heat island effect has taken its toll on human health and increase in energy expenditure to cool interior buildings and cars. The 24 square foot of non-paved planter area is not sufficient in size. Nonetheless, other alternative mitigation strategies can be utilized to provide enhancement to the root zone (such as use of pervious asphalt around the planter area and/or use of structured soil in addition to maximizing water-harvesting techniques in the parking lot). |
