Codes applicable to signs include: Unified Development Code (UDC, 7A, Sign Standards), National Electrical Code (NEC), Tucson - Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC)
1. UDC.
A) The request is to retrofit two freestanding signs with a digital sign component. One sign is located along River Road frontage, and the other is located along Craycroft frontage.
B) River Road and Craycroft Road are both designated by the City of Tucson Major Streets and Routes Map (MS&R) as Scenic Corridor roadways. As such, the applicable sign district, regardless of zoning or use, is the Scenic Corridor Zone, per UDC. 7A.11.3.
C) A scenic buffer, 30’ deep from the property line into the site, runs along both the River Road frontage and Craycroft frontage. While freestanding signs are allowed in this scenic buffer, specific lighting criteria apply to freestanding signs at a site in the scenic district and signs in the scenic buffer. One of these specific performance criteria factors is that, Per UDC 7A.11.3.g, within the scenic buffer, digital signs are prohibited.
D) The application cannot proceed further for this request. Variations may not be processed from this section of the code, as it is a prohibited sign category.
