Codes applicable to signage include: Unified Development Code (UDC, 7A, Sign Standards), National Electrical Code (NEC), Tucson - Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC)

1. UDC:
A) I acknowledge the wall signs are within sign area allowances. Recommend separate wall signs from package and submit separate from freestanding sign and freeway sign aspects. (no comments on wall signs - submittal for them can be approved immediately)

B) add the street property line frontage dimensions along the I-10 frontage road and along the Grant Road frontage for both sign types allowed and allowed sign area data calculations

C) site has been vacant for over a decade; freeway sign and pole sign face nonconforming aspects. No information is provided in the package about the freeway sign – clarify intentions. (Records search for prior permitting data for the sign structure is recommended. You may apply for one on our portal as a “records request”.)

D) UDC. 7A.9.1.; pole sign is nonconforming to present code and has not been utilized for over a decade; demonstrate not abandoned – provide history of active utility statements since prior use discontinued prior to 2013.

E) UDC 7A.9.1.C indicates if a nonconforming sign has proven not abandoned, that a reasonable repair excludes retrofit of the sign with digital price changer. (contact me at 52-837-4961 or Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov for assistance and discussion, if desired) The options for the proposal include:
1) locate a conforming freestanding sign off Grant Road frontage, (less than 225’ property line frontage indicates a monument or low-profile sign allowed only)

2) or if continued utility established and nonconforming sign remains, the sign would not contain a digital price changer.

3) Or, apply for a Sign Design Option case and include a topper and architectural components of the building to match onto the sign structure for consideration of the request to retrofit and utilize it.

2) NEC / OLC (all signs) & sought digital sign (FCC and OLC)
A) indicate whether new electrical would be run to freestanding and freeway sign, or demonstrate safe continued active electrical via electrical engineer sealed diagram since the site has been shuttered over 10 years (staff did not see new electrical run to detached signage under the recent building permit for electrical for fuel and canopy structure – TC-COM-1223-02957, nor under TC-COM-0823-02044 fuel canopy, nor TC-COM-0423-00960)

B) in anticipation that the digital sign package component would move forward, please check with digital sign manufacturer and provide simple statement which digital unit would be used, and indicate that remote operated unit is FCC compliant and capable of dimming to 200 Nits from sunset to sunrise.

3) IBC -
A) in anticipation of potential work on freestanding sign, mounting cabinetry into a frame – provide attachment data for unit and for any pole covering (notes / diagram) If a new, compliant detached sign is planned, then provide full footer, attachment, setback, height, sign area, electrical – etc. for that sign. (Staff will review promptly.)

General: Note that the diagram UL notes are blurred– clear and enlarge

For fastest process steps:
