04/22/2024 Signs REQUIRES RESUBMIT RE: freestanding sign review
For: Cubesmart
AT: 2424 N Oracle Rd
Sign Permit: TS-PRM-0424-00151
Reviewer: Heather Thrall (Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov)

Codes applicable to signage include: Unified Development Code (UDC, 7A, Sign Standards), National Electrical Code (NEC), Tucson - Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC)

1. UDC:
A) The review was done for 2424 N Oracle, as noted on plans, though application has wrong address.
B) Per UDC 7A.10.2.C.2.a.(3)(iv) – the location does not have sufficient street property line frontage for a pole sized category of a freestanding sign. A minimum of 225’ of street property line frontage is required for a pole sign. Please note that a monument or low-profile sign could be permitted here, if they met code for height, setback from street curb and sign area on the cabinet.
C) The City of Tucson has a Master Sign Program process available to allow applicants to seek variations to code criteria (i.e .height or setback for example), providing good design is shown for the sign (requires a top, middle and base, architectural compatibility with site buildings and in alignment with other freestanding signs in the geographic area for the code variation requested. Please review UDC 7A.7.1. E and G, and purpose for the Sign Standards 7A.7 and purpose for the master sign program for additional information. Note that redesign would be required for the sign structure.

2) NEC / OLC
A) the standard electrical notes are missing from the application materials
B) add note: signs shall be UL or MET rated
C) add note: signs shall have UL sticker, manufacturer sticker and installer sticker placed on the cabinet
D) add note; signs shall shut off at midnight for non-24/7 operations
E) add note: a dedicated sign circuit will be provided and clearly labeled on the power panel
F) add note: a safety lock out shall be provided where disconnect is not immediately visible to the sign
G) label location of disconnect switch
H) add note that replacement sign is using existing power to prior freestanding sign
I) Note that in Tucson, all signs cannot exceed 4400k internal illumination color temperature and have a curfew of midnight for sign shut off.

3) IBC -
A) thank you for engineering for footer and pipe; note though, that due to the size of freestanding sign allowed for this site, the engineering provided was not reviewed for this structure at this time.
B) provide attachment details for any size of detached sign (not in engineering, it appears for footer and pole)
C) note any field welding or size / type / number of bolts (A325s mentioned in engineer statement, requires special inspections)

Resubmittal requires new design – either to a low-profile sig or monument sign that meets code, or a re-design of this sign with all criteria of a master sign program sign implemented on the plans (i.e. the topper, middle and base and good design).
