| 05/08/2023 | Signs | REQUIRES RESUBMIT | RE: proposed entire refurbishment of nonconforming pole sign - new neon / colors At: 4759 E Speedway Bl / Sherwin Williams Permit: TS-PRM-0323-00250 Reviewer: H. Thrall (Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov) Date: 5/8/23 Codes; Unified Development Code (7A, Sign Standards), National Electrical Code (NEC 600), Tucson - Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC) 2018. 1. UDC: A) separate the wall sign from this overall package and resubmit separately B) a refurbishment of this nonconforming neon pole sign in entirely new colors, logos and amount of neon is not a reasonable repair, UDC 7A.9.1.C. This is also not in alignment with the Heritage Landmark Sign process,, as entirely different colors and fonts are proposed for this sign rather than in keeping with the HLS process. The HLS process for this sign was approved with a different design by Mayor & Council in 2015 and never effectuated under case T15SA00276. As such, the only option for this proposal is to seek an evaluation under the Sign Design Review Committee review process (SDRC). Please be aware that should the sign meet Outdoor Lighting Code criteria, and should the SDRC process approve the requests involved with the proposal - all neon work would have to be done on site, the sign could not be removed and returned to the site. C) The following aspects would be evaluated for this proposal: increase in sign area allowance for the tenant space from the 3 to 1 ratio allowed; increase in number of freestanding pole signs for the overall premises, maintain height, sign area and setback for the nonconforming sign. As it is not a reasonable repair, it is reviewed under the full code aspects as a new sign. D) call out what is planned for the existing pole sign just immediately west of this sign - removal? 2. Electrical and Outdoor Lighting Code review is underway. If the sign meets the OLC, the SDRC process can commence. 3. IBC - any review of attachments, etc. would be done only after SDRC process is completed. If you have questions, contact me at Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov SDRC applications are being emailed to the contractor. |
