Codes: Unified Development Code (UDC, 7A, Sign Standards), National Electrical Code (NEC), Tucson - Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC)

1. UDC:
A) rezoning conditions of case TP-ENT-1022-00001 require all signs to shut off between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. daily; add note and update all plan sheets. (Staff is adding sheet 1 of the development package, with all rezoning notes, to this package.)
B) add notes that: “all detached signs to be 5 feet from fire hydrants, 2’ from driveway curbs, 18” from adjacent parking spaces, and outside of any easements”
C) relocate traffic directional signs (i.e. “G.7. ) to be on site and out of city right of way.
D) sign area on the wall sign package needs to be fully dimensioned (i.e. star logo, with cabinet under) so that cumulative sign area is accurately depicted (it will be within code, it’s having a clear understanding of the size that is relevant)
E) (repeat comment) the sign area on the freestanding sign cabinet needs double checking and updates to reflect the sign area on both cabinets together, please (looks like notes don't match the dimensions) (I acknowledge it will be within 72 square feet of cabinet area, just dimension it correctly)
F) (repeat information) Be advised, this freestanding sign can be the only freestanding sign issued by direct permit for both parcels along here as they are the same premise (shared driveway). A second freestanding sign would require a master sign program to be reviewed (2 signs less than 450' of frontage for an overall premise.)

2) NEC / OLC / FCC -
A) (OLC, 501.3) Maximum color temperature for an internally illuminated sign in the City of Tucson is 4400k. The Watchfire digital sign manufacturer data sheet is not to the unit that is to be used here, and has three unit series identified; two have clear specs on the data sheet that state the color temperature is 6500k. The third potential unit series color temperature information is missing from the spec sheet. Contact Watchfire, obtain the spec sheet for the specific unit to be used here, and ensure it is max 4400k and is fully capable to dim down to 200 Nits from sunset to the 7 p.m. curfew for this site.
B) add note on plan set that “power to the pole sign is to be run by others via separate building permit” (may be included with the building permit plan review underway for the circuit)
C) Add general safety note to all illuminated signs sheets “safety lock out to be provided at all locations where the shut off switch is not directly visible to the sign” (provide this in the event that the ship in signs do not have the disconnects as depicted, as there are two points – safety first for all contractor install teams to know they are protected)
D) Repeat comment: provide manufacturer statement of FCC compliance for the specific chosen digital Watchfire unit (small cellular wireless cannot be interrupted by digital remote operations)

3) IBC:
A) (repeat comment) acknowledge the engineering provided for the freestanding sign - however, no information on saddles / bolts, and special inspections that may be applicable were provided by Sean McFarland. He reviewed the engineering and stamped the set for the sign at 1511 W Valencia, can you please pull that data and check for the notations he would ordinarily provide for the mounts to the cabinet / pole system? (i.e. how many saddles/ bolts / sizes / special inspections and or field welding is applicable here to mount the cabinetry to the indicated pole?) Note – additional engineering may be required here for the connections from the cabinetry to the pole… Check with Sean McFarland, P.E., please.
B) clarify the attachments for the 4 x 6 panels on the clearance bar – they should be substantial anchors for wind.

Please feel free to email me as soon as you have assembled the data together and have resubmitted it under the sign permit package: TS-PRM-0224-00059 and I will promptly pull it for review of the updates. Thank you! (Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov)
