07/20/2023 | Site Engineering | REQUIRES RESUBMIT | FEMA requires that the shed be floodproofed in one of two ways: 1. That the shed is elevated at least 1 foot above the base flood elevation. For this site, the base flood elevation is at 2387 feet above sea level, so the shed’s finished floor elevation would have to be 2388 feet or greater. Our topographical map shows that the ground elevation in this area is about 2386 feet above sea level, so the shed would need to be on around two feet of fill. 2. That the shed is flood vented to prevent wall collapse. Flood vents are essentially grates that are installed in the wall of a structure to allow flood water in and out of the structure to minimize the risk of the building collapsing in case of a flood. There need to be at least 2 vents, with vents on at least 2 different sides of the exterior walls The bottom of the vents must be not higher than 1 foot above adjacent grade, the top must be below the Base Flood Elevation (BFE). If you use non-engineered flood vents (I.E, air vents), the net open area (essentially the area of the vent minus any grates or screens, so the area where water can flow through) must be 1 square inch per square foot of enclosure space. If you use engineered flood vents, the net certified flood opening area must match the area of the enclosure. The net certified flood opening area should be in the product description of any engineered flood vent. If the building is flood vented, it does not need to be elevated above the BFE.
