E3606.5.1 Location: the SPD shall be an integral part of the service equipment or shall be located immediately adjacent, if not located at each next-level distribution equipment downstream toward the load. E3606.5.2 Type: the SPD shall be a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD. E3606.5.3 Replacement: Where service equipment is replaced, all of the requirements of this section shall apply. 2023 NEC 230.67 mandates whole-house surge protection (SPD) for services supplying dwelling units, dormitories, hotel/motel guest rooms, and patient rooms in nursing homes, requiring a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD, often built-in or next to the service, with a minimum 10kA nominal discharge current rating, and also applies to service replacement, expanding on the 2020 code's requirement for just dwelling units. |
