4. Pedestrian Gate – Accessibility Requirements
Please revise the plans to include the following accessibility provisions for the pedestrian gate in accordance with the 2017 ICC A117.1:
A. Maneuvering Clearance (Section 404.2.3.2)
Provide a minimum 18-inch maneuvering clearance on the front approach, pull side of the gate.
B. Door and Gate Hardware (Section 404.2.6)
Revise details to demonstrate that all hardware (handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operable parts):
Is operable with one hand and does not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Meets the following force limitations:
15 pounds maximum for hardware operated by a forward pushing or pulling motion.
28 inch-pounds maximum for hardware operated by rotational motion.
C. Hardware Height (Section 404.2.6.1)
Provide dimensions showing that operable hardware is mounted not less than 34 inches and not more than 48 inches above the finished floor or ground surface.
D. Gate Surface (Smooth Surface Requirement) (Section 404.2.9)
Provide details showing a smooth surface on the push side of the gate extending the full width, located within 10 inches of the bottom of the gate, to prevent wheelchair footrests from catching. Kick plates or equivalent detailing may be used to demonstrate compliance.
