Indicate the location of all “night lighting” on the plans for egress illumination or indicate light sensors will be used. All rooms and usable floor surfaces in a building shall be equipped with artificial lighting and shall be illuminated at all times that the space is occupied. 2018 IBC 1008.2. RESPONSE: Egress illumination is provided in all occupied spaces with existing manual controls. Night lights or light sensors are not required by code. The code does require that the egress path is illuminated at all times both under normal power ( IBC 1008.2) and under emergency power ( IBC 1008.3). The non-emergency lighting is commonly referred to as "night lighting". Manual switching only provides the required illumination if the switches are turned on. There is no guarantee that this will occur, so night lighting or occupancy sensors are provided to meet the requirement. 2018 IBC 1008.2 Illumination required. The means of egress serving a room or space shall be illuminated at all times that the room or space is occupied. 2018 IBC 1008.2.1. Illumination level under normal power. The means of egress illumination level shall be not less than 1 footcandle at the walking surface.
