The Building Official will make the final determination. The existing main entrance door is narrower than required to accommodate 50% of the occupant load per IBC 1029.2. To address this, a new 40-inch exit doorway is proposed near the main entrance creating a main entrance system with the capacity of both doors appearing to exceed the required 50% for a main entrance. The new door will have a separate code compliant landing and exit discharge path, functionally supplementing the main entrance. Together, the existing and new door appears to provide more than sufficient egress capacity to meet the intent of IBC 1029.2. Based on this analysis, adding the proposed 40-inch exit door near the main entrance, even with a landing and exit discharge path separate from the main entrance, appears to provide sufficient egress capacity to meet the intent of IBC 1029.2. This solution would appear to provide occupant safety while accommodating the historic nature of this building. Please contact me if you have any questions about these comments.
