| Commercial Building Express | REVIEW COMPLETED | The common path of egress travel from the furthest point in the suite exceeds the travel distance limit by 3'. The following is my research and recommendation as the Building Official will make the final decision. There are several factors that would lead me to recommend approval of the 104’ distance for the common path of travel. 1. The building is a 1A construction type and is less generally safe. 2. The height of the acoustical tile ceiling is 8’-6’ and 1 foot above the code minimum ceiling height of 7’-6”, with the higher ceilings providing more exit travel time before smoke obscures breathing and visibility for the occupants. Since 4 feet likely represents 2 or 3 steps for most, the increased height of the ceiling would provide more than enough time to travel 4 feet. 3. The 104’ of travel distance is based on a conservative travel path, which would likely be shortened when being used for exiting travel. In fact, by cutting the corner and slightly angling the path of travel, the 100’ distance is accomplished. Approval is recommended in this case.
