08/10/2010 INSP - FULL RDUARTE Approved Petition of appeal to the Fire Code Official: 2003 NFPA 20, Section 5.12.1.1- The pump needs to be separated from the rest of the (fully sprinklered) bldg by a 1-hour fire rated room.

EXPLANATION OF WHY CONFORMANCE WITH THE ABOVE REQUIREMENT PRESENTS AN UNUSUAL PROBLEM:
The new fire pump was installed in an existing bldg making it very difficult to provide a separate enclosure.

STATE SPECIFICALLY WAT IS PROPOSED IN LIEU OF LITERAL COMPLIANCE: Concrete filled bollards have been installed around the new pump installation, the CMU block wall provides far more than a 1 hr fire rated separation between the fire pump and the system it serves and there are no openings through the 10" CMU demising wall within 50' of the pump area. There is direct access from the exterior into this space for fire department operations. We believe that the intent of NFPA 20 to protect the fire pump equipment both from fire and physical damage is being met.

DECISION OF THE FIRE CODE OFFICIAL:
Approved with stipulations:
The stipulation is that the fire pump shall be in conformance with the electrical requirements found in the NFPA 20, 2010 Edition.
Per Chief Dan Uthe Fire Marshal 08/10/10.
