| 10/02/2009 | INSP - FULL | RDUARTE | Approved | Petition of appeal to the Fire Code Official: 903.2.7- R2 occupancies shall have an automatic fire sprinkler system installed throughout. Explain why conformance with the above requirement presents an unusual problem: The old fire sprinkler system in Apache-Santa Cruz residence was totally replaced with a new fire sprinkler system with quick response heads throughout except in the two freight elevators. Fire sprinker head s are required in the elevator pits. Installing fire spinker heads in the elevator pits will trigger a requirement in the elevator code that mandates that the elevator be upgraded to the current elevator code. The cost of upgrading the freight elevators creates a significant financial burden at this time We request that the Unversity of Arizona not be required to install fire sprinkler heads in the elevator pits at this time. STATE SPECIFICALLY WHAT IS PROPOSED IN LIEU OF LITERAL COMPLIANCE: oNE OF THE FREIGHT ELEVATORS HAS BEEN TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE AND IT'S HYDRAULIC FLUID HAS BEEN DRAINED. tHE REMAINING FREIGHT ELEVATOR IS FOR FREIGHT ONLY, PASSNGERS ARE NOT ALLOWED. tHE CONTROL PANEL INSIDE THE CAR HAS BEEN DISABLED. iT CAN ONLY BE CONTROLLED FROM THE OUTSIDE BY SELECT STAFF PERSONNEL WITH A KEY. THE FIRE SPRINKLER UPGRADE HAS ENHANCED THE LEVEL OF FIRE PROTECTION SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE PREVIOUS SYSTEM. DECISION OF THE FIRE CODE OFFICIAL: Approved by Dan Uthe Fire Marshall |
