Entered by HTHRALL1 - RE: sign review
For: 4702 E 22nd St / Jet Carwash
Sign permit: T22OT00609
Reviewer: H. Thrall
Date: 09/16/22 / 2nd review
Codes: Unified Development Code (UDC) Sign Standards 7A, National Electrical Code (NEC) Tucson-Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC) 2018
1. UDC:
A. Update sign area for each face to 41.94 square feet
B. Mulit-sided sign; Provide interior angle of each sign corner (7A.6.1.B)
C. Note that sign height is taken from the top of street curb to top of letters or at the average point 5 feet away from each side of the sign to top of letters. The drawing shows a 10' tall sign without room for error, check your site grade and note that you may have to lower a component where the metal framework is located / pipe.
D. Location is an issued with the multi-sided sign, as shown / provided / discussed - move the sign structure so that the interior faces each straddle a side of the bisection line at the street corner, or make into two separate signs physically, with one at 22nd side and one at Swan side. Your sign location is an issue for property line and for drainage basin as well. Please refer back to the diagrams staff provided to indicate where the bisection line is to straddle, and see the highlighted property line as well as the drainage basin. Either reduce the length of each sign face to fit into this area, or you'll need to provide two separate signs - again one on 22nd and one on Swan. Show bisection line on YOUR plan and note property line on YOUR plan.
2. NEC / OLC:
a. Note that timer shall shut off the sign at midnight
b. Note location of power supply - i.e. in building riser room or is there a pedestal?
c. Note location of timer, should be next to adjacent power supply
d. Note location of circuit and provide lock out switch
e. The amps / volts / circuits listed seem to be for one digital message center, rather than all 3 sides - provide clarification
f. Provide electrical volts/ amps/ circuits details for the letter signs on all three sides of the sign
g. Provide note that signs will dim from sunset to midnight curfew to 200 Nits maximum brightness
h. Declare how signs will dim - i.e. timer / photocell / dimmer mechanism attached to timer?
3. IBC:
a. Provide construction attachment details for each component of the sign and how connected to supports.
b. Provide labels for each of the construction componentns - i.e. type of metal, type of "base", any other components
c. Provide a footer on the plan that matches the footer in the engineering
d. Declare the location of all attachments to the support pipe and how - ie. Saddles / bolts/ typical sizes of the bolts - any field welds
e. Declare whether the top of the sign structure has a cover or is this open on the interior to the backs of all three sign faces? Engineering is not labeled and this could be a perforated cover of some sort or nothing at all…
f. Where is the service access?
Additional comments may be forthcoming. Staff is going to schedule a meeting with the contractor to clarify items prior resubmittal to Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov
