RE: sign permit review (monument) & wall sign
Site: 283 N Stone (Bates Mansion) - historic building, downtown
Permit: T20OT00260
Reviewer: H. Thrall
Date: 3/25/2020
Codes: Unified Development Code (UDC) 7A Sign Standards, National Electric Code (NEC) 600, Outdoor Lighting Code (OLC), International Building Code (IBC)
Building is historic and in downtown, requires historic review.
Zone: OCR-2 / pedestrian district downtown
Sign Standards:
1) Monument requires 20’ setback from face of street curb. Sign is shown at 12.33 from street curb.
As revision is not possible due to proximity of building to street, suggest projecting sign attached to building instead. A projecting sign must have a minimum 8’ vertical clearance under the sign. Alternative if monument continues, is to ask for setback reduction by Sign Design Review Committee (SDRC).
2) Monument signs require architectural embellishment along support pole if pole is not covered. SDRC process requires further design elements for setback reduction, but may be potential to have sign design aspects reviewed under 7A.7.1. criteria.
3) Provide construction details for either type of sign - support assembly / pole diameter and bolts for monument style, or for projecting sign.
Send revisions to Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov
