Thrall issued prelim referral to Swaim for 6 variances to dimensional standards of canopy signage (Section 3-59 of the Sign Code): 4 variances for east canopy sign, 2 variances for south canopy sign. Awaiting response from Swaim's team for any dimensional changes to call referral as official.

RE: minor adjustments on plans requested, and sign variance review findings


For: AC Marriott, 151 E Broadway Blvd

Rather than splitting between Swaim and Pearson's south canopy sign submittal, kept same permit number for Pearson's submittal of just south canopy sign, just noted Swaim submitted for both east and south canopy signs (T17OT00474) as a revision.

Regarding the south canopy sign:

1) a variance can be avoided for sign projection from canopy edge if diagram 6 on sheet AE-5 is revised to show lettering face to be in line with canopy edge (like diagram 5 for east canopy sign).

2) found difference in letter size from 15" to 16" between diagram 4 of sheet AE-5 and elevation note on sheet AE-3, which leads me to... #3

3) a maximum of 18" letters is allowed without a variance, if a slight increase in letter size is desired on revision (adjust sign height off ground, sign dimensions, increase sign area on elevation and application)

4) regardless of 16" or 18" in letters, a variance for float above the canopy still applies, as the lettering will be mounted on a 4.5" raceway atop the canopy, rather than directly on the canopy.

5) regardless of 16" or 18" in letters, a variance applies for sign height exceeding 15' above sidewalk- due to canopy height at 14'1", raceway mount at 4.5 ", and letter height.

Regarding east canopy sign:
1) a variance will apply to exceed letter height of 18"

2) a variance will apply to exceed sign height of 2' above canopy (2' letters + 4" raceway)

3) a variance will apply to have a float above the canopy (lettering mounted on 4" raceway atop canopy)

4) a variance will apply to have sign height exceed 15' above pedestrian surface (nearly 29' to top)

5) Sheets AE-1, AE-2, can you call out both sign locations? And on AE-4 - can you call out the actual sign location for the east canopy sign on diagrams 1 and 3 please?

General - Sheet AE-5, diagrams 5 & 6 need details on how the sign is mounted to the raceway and then the mounting of the raceway to the canopy (i.e. what size, type, number of bolts, screws, etc.)

If changes regarding above, send revision sheets and application via PDF (I can print at 11x17 here) to me. I can then review any changes against my findings thus far, and issue the referral to the Board of Adjustment process.

05/25/2017 SIGN SITE REVIEW Continued Swaim & Associates submitted an overall application for review of both the proposed south and east canopy signs.

A new review will be done for Board of Adjustment referral comments for both signs.
05/05/2017 SIGN SITE REVIEW Correction Required RE: sign permit T17OT00474

1) Section 3-59: Proposed sign exceeds allowed height off top of sidewalk. Contractor sent canopy sign criteria.

2) Need side view of the sign from the canopy connection, and to the distance from wall behind, to continue review (looking for any recess or protrusion from canopy, any float above canopy - and distance from wall behind per Section 3-59 Canopy Sign criteria of the Sign Code.

3) Inspector Brian Wiese examined location for measurements of the top of canopy in it's current metal framework. Height off sidewalk to top of canopy (without any potential further improvements) is 13'7". Max canopy sign height permitted is 15' from sidewalk. Please revise to work within these criteria, or clarify a variance is being requested for an official referral to be made to the variance process. Inspector Wiese emailed sign contractor his findings.

4) Please examine building plans for end result of canopy construction to account for any increase in height of the surface off the ground, then revise canopy lettering as necessary (again if variance requested, please note) and resubmit plan set for completion of review to Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov
