RE: 9/9/16 3RD review (variances + special permit), H.Thrall
(3rd submittal Received by email 9/9/16)
For: Dave & Buster's Restaurant
At: 1390 E Tucson Marketplace Blvd (Original submittal under 1125 E Tucson Marketplace Blvd has been fixed)
Zoned: PAD-15
Sign Code District: Planned Area Development (PAD) Section 3-78

COMMENTS:
1) The proposed canopy sign on the north elevation is comprised of individual illuminated letters at 3' tall by 30' long (90 square feet sign area), mounted directly on an approximately 72' long, entry canopy to be built at approx. 19' height. (Note, height of the canopy on the building plans is 19'1" - but on the sign package, the maximum overall sign height is listed as 25' from top of sign to grade, likely for margin of construction differences than approved plans for a 3' difference in canopy height at top.) Further, the canopy is an irregular shape and extends from the building at differing lengths at each end. The west end of the canopy extends 8' from the building wall, whereas the east end of the canopy extends over 21' from the building wall. The sign is mounted along the angled edge of the canopy, and it is unclear, due to differing drawings (pages 2 & 3 versus page 4 of the submittal), if the canopy sign is going to extend at some point further than 20' from the building wall behind it.
Such signage as proposed requires the following variances, at minimum, A-C as listed below.
NOTE, variance D is listed in the event the sign would extend greater than 20' from the building wall:
A) 3-59.C.1. maximum size: the vertical measure of the sign face shall not exceed eighteen (18) inches…
B) 3-59.C.2.a. maximum height: top of canopy sign shall be no more than two (2) feet above top surface of the canopy directly below canopy sign …
C) 3-59.C.2.a. … AND no more than fifteen (15) feet in height above finished grade immediately below canopy sign.
D) - ADDED JUST AS REMINDER/ CAUTION - 3-59.D. Orientation: the face of the canopy sign shall be vertical and shall be parallel to the building wall that backs it except if it is affixed to a horizontally curved or other irregularly shaped canopy and no individual letter is angled more than twenty-five (25) degrees from the building wall. (CONTRACTOR EMAILED, SIGN WILL NOT EXTEND FURTHER THAN 19' FROM BUILDING WALL BEHIND.)

2) The proposed round cabinet sign at 144 square feet on north building elevation is to be mounted to a wall clearly constructed for a sign and the parapet and sign extends above all other parapets of the building on north elevation. The proposed sign may be evaluated per Section 3-42 for integrated architectural feature signs seeking a special permit in accordance with Article XI, the Board of Adjustment process.

b) Add total sign area for all signs (Section 3-18)
c) Add shut off switches in accordance with NEC 2011 - Section 600

e) check building street frontages of building to match building plans and add to sheet 5 and note both I-10 frontage and Tucson Marketplace frontage on sheet 6 (building and sign location plan)
