| 08/01/2012 | SIGN SITE REVIEW | Denied | Further information required on submittal - unclear as to whether Article 8 or repair activity. If Article 8: MCDONALD'S, 4495 N ORACLE - EXISTING NONCONFORMING POLE SIGN DAMAGED BY STORM. CLIENT PROPOSING NEW SIGN CABINET DIFFERENT SIZE RATHER THAN REPAIR EXISTING, AND REUSE OF EXISTING SUPPORT POLE. NEW SIGN CABINET = FALLS UNDER ARTICLE 8 SIGN CODE CRITERIA FOR 20% REDUCTION IN SIGN AREA AND HEIGHT: The following review was done by Sign Code staff reviewer Heather Thrall, who may be reached at 520-837-4951 or Heather.Thrall@tucsonaz.gov The applicable code reviewed is Chapter 3, Tucson Sign Code. (NOTE: structural engineering is NOT required for the proposed configuration of the new pole sign cabinet, as it is smaller than existing cabinet, per Eric Newcomb -structural reviewer.) PLEASE ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING REVIEW COMMENTS: 1) Provide construction drawings showing method of attachment from the new cabinet to the existing support pole. (3-18.B.4.) 2) Provide electrical details for the new illuminated cabinet (3-18.B.5) 3) Provide calculations on the plan showing the 20% reduction in sign area and height between the existing sign and the new sign. (3-96) 4) Note, the height of the resulting new sign needs to be listed on the drawing (3-18). 5) Note, the height listed on the sign application is 21.4" - which exceeds the height allowance under the recently revised Article 8 provision 3-96.D.3, which states that "the sign must be decreased in height by at least 20% and shall not exceed 20 feet in height." Please revise the sign application and address comment 3 & 4 together with the 20' height max. 6) Provide a pole cover and add it to the drawing, per 3-96.D.6. Note the minimum dimensions of the pole cover for a pole sign must be 18" by 6" per 3-60.C.5. 7) Please clarify if the side view drawing provided is for the existing sign or the proposed sign. 8) Provide a dimensioned side view drawing/photo for both the existing sign and the proposed sign to ensure the new sign configuration is not wider/thicker than the existing sign (Per Sign Code Administrator determination). 9) The sign area measurement for the new cabinet implies the lettering is raised off the cabinet. Please draw a box dimension around the raised lettering and specify on the plan it is raised lettering, then show raised lettering on the side view of the sign. (3-18, 3-32 and Sign Code Administrator determination.) 10) Provide photos of all existing signage for the McDonald's establishment, per 3-96.D.2.a. with dimensions (staff has emailed contractor a list). 11) Revise setback on the site plan. While the new sign cabinet can remain at the existing sign cabinet configuration, the sign location needs to be clarified on the accompanying site plan and the setback is greater than the 25' noted. (from curb to property line is 35' and the sign sits farther setback than that). (3-36, 3-18, 3-96) |
