| 08/18/2010 | INSP - FULL | Approved | Petition of appeal to the fire code official: 1003.1.3.2 #6: Entrance doors in bldgs with an occupancy in a group M shall not be secured from the egress side during periods that the bldg is open to the general public. Explanation of why conformance with the above requirement presents an unusual problem: I have been in business since 1980, in 1982 I opened my 1st store, I worked alone. In order to get jewelers block ins. I had to keep the doors locked. We have buzzers, kept around our necks so we can buz people in and out. We have a very small show room, there is always a salesperson with the customer at all times and in case of a emergency we have a switch to shut down the whole system from inside and out. In 28 yrs this has never been a issue. State specifically what is proposed in lieu of literal compliance: wear necklaces buzzers to buz people out. DECISION OF FIRE CODE OFFICIAL: Petition of appeal has been denied per Chief Dan Uthe Fire Marshall. To allow a magnetic lock that is controlled remotely to unlock the door has specific code requirements. Those requirements include the lock shall be connected to a fire alarm system, that upon activation of the fire alarm system the locking device on the door would be released. The locking device would have to be interlocked with the electrical system so in the event of a power failure the locking device would be released. See Tucson Fire Code Section 1008. |
