| 02/03/2010 | COMPL - INITIAL INSPECTION | Approved | This is written in response to the request that was made to discuss the Loma Catalina Company procedures for gasoline spills. The request was made after a gasoline spill occurred on December 30, 2009 at the Catalina Mart located at 5 South Houghton. Loma Catalina employees receive instruction regarding the appropriate procedures for gas spills through a variety of means including Chevron video classes, the Loma Catalina Employee Handbook and continued on the job training taught by our managers and GMs. During the training phase of our employees' orientation they watch the appropriate Chevron videos and receive instruction from store managers. The company standing operating procedures mandate the steps that employees must take in the event of a gasoline spill. If the spill is more than five gallons of gasoline and or cannot be contained within four minutes, then the employees are to immediately stop all pumps, call the local fire department, mark off spill area with harzard orange cones, and if possible push the vehicle out of the way. All other noticealble spills, employees will again stop all pumps, will ensure that any nearby cars are pushed away from the spill and that orange cones are put in place to block off the area. Then the employee is to use an approved absorbent material to soak up the gasoline. The absorbent material is then placed in an open plastic container, once absorbent material has aerated and is dry it is disposed at a land fill by the Loma Catalina maintenance staff. The gasoline spill in question that occurred on December 30th involved a fine spray that was emitting from one of the dispenser nozzles. The employee on duty pushed the "all stop" button but the gasoline continued to come out of the nozzle. She immediately contacted me and I directed her to call the fire department. The spray of gasoline stopped at about the same time that the fire department arrived at the store. I directed my manager to call the Fire Department because I was concerned that the fine spray continued after the "all stop" was pressed. I arrived approximately 30 minutes later and the area was marked off and the fine spay had stopped. I remained at the store for another hour. I later found that afternoon that a valve was slow to close all the way permitting the gasoline leak to continue for a short period of time. We since have had Vista Mainenance come out to our store. The service nozzle was replaced and the dispenser control valve was replaced and it is currently operating properly. I am also going to post an updated safety notice for all employees to read and sign in the event that this happens again. Thanks for your service.. i am a retired Infantry officer myself. She did not know what to do or understand her companies policy for handling spills. She never called 911. People were driving through the spill at the time the engine crew arrived.
