05/27/2008 INSP - LIFE SAFETY Approved Recieved the following complaint via email:
Hello,
I have a quick question regarding the codes and regulations regarding Emergency Exit doors. Tonight I was seated at a table on the patio at Bamboo Club located in Park Place Mall 5870 E Broadway Blvd, #524, partially in front of a door labeled Emergency Exit. Throughout my dinner, I was bothered by people coming in and out of this door. Eventually, my chair was struck and pushed by the door when a waiter came barreling through. I had had enough and went to find a manager whom I then asked if the door was supposed to be an Emergency Exit only door? She informed me that in fact the door was the main door accessing the patio.
First, this seems to be clearly a fire code violation and they need to remove the table in front of this door as it is partially blocked. In addition, another question I have is with the door itself. If it is labeled as "Emergency Exit," can this door be used as a main access way or does it need to have an alarm and not be used as main access? (or...does this only apply to doors labeled as Emergency Exit "ONLY")
The table was bad to begin with since the patio was nearly empty and yet they sat us in a heavy traffic area, but when I saw the Emergency Exit labeling, I figured that this would be a good question for TFD due to the fact Bamboo Club seemed to have a nonchalant attitude and just suggested I move. I think they need to be put in their place if in fact they are violating fire code.
Thank you for looking into this matter.
05/27/2008 INSP - LIFE SAFETY Approved Upon inspecting the restaurant, found tables and chairs on patio did not protude into the path of egress. There is no violation of fire code when door to patio is used as access. Its use is not limited to emergency exit. The only requirements is that the path of egress is not impeded or blocked and the full width of the opening (exit) is not decreased throughout the path of egress. Gate on patio was in proper operation and had no means of locking or obstructions. Informed manager of restaraunt of complaint and reminded her to be sure exit is not blocked by table or chairs. No violations found.
