Regarding manual pull ststions: Per Chief Uthe, suppression hood systems will not have to be updated, including moving manual pull stations, until such a time as service or hydrostatic testing requires upgrade to UL 300 system. This inspector strongly recommended to manager that pull stations be moved per current code for employee safety.
12/12/2007 VIOL - FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS Correction Required The Tucson Fire Department has conducted a hood suppression system inspection at the above stated business . Below is a list of violations that shall be corrected to provide compliance with the applicable codes, regulations and ordinances. Compliance is required by the 2006 International Fire Code (with modifications).

___1. PROBLEM: Manual activation pull stations are too close to cooking appliance.
TFC REFERENCE: 904.11.1 Manual system operation. A manual actuation device shall be located at or near a means of egress from the cooking area a minimum of 10 feet (3048 mm) and a maximumof
20 feet (6096 mm) from the kitchen exhaust system.
The manual actuation device shall be installed not more than
48 inches (1200 mm) nor less than 42 inches (1067 mm)
above the floor and shall clearly identify the hazard protected.
The manual actuation shall require a maximum force
of 40 pounds (178 N) and a maximum movement of 14
inches (356 mm) to actuate the fire suppression system.
REQUIRED CORRECTION: Have manual activation pull stations installed as per code requirements.

___2. PROBLEM: Red caps missing from nozzle tips on hood system over fryer near french fry warmer.
TFC REFERENCE: 901.6 Inspection, testing and maintenance. Fire detection, alarm and extinguishing systems shall be maintained in an
operative condition at all times, and shall be replaced or
repaired where defective. NFPA 17A, 4.3.1.5: All discharge nozzles shall be provided with caps or other suitable devices to prevent the entrance of grease vapors, moisture or other foreign materials into the piping.
REQUIRED CORRECTION: Nozzle tips shall be free of obstructions and shall be capped.

___3. PROBLEM: Electric oven placed under hood system that used to cover a griddle.
TFC REFERENCE: 904.11 Commercial cooking systems. The automatic fire-extinguishing system for commercial cooking systems shall be of a type recognized for protection of commercial
cooking equipment and exhaust systems of the type and
arrangement protected. Preengineered automatic dry- and
wet-chemical extinguishing systems shall be tested in accordance
with UL 300 and listed and labeled for the intended
application. Other types of automatic fire-extinguishing systems shall be listed and labeled for specific use as protection for commercial cooking operations.
REQUIRED CORRECTION: Get a permit for change of use or to shut it off.
