05/24/2005 | COMPLIANCE | Approved | this letter was sent on 5-24-05: Dear Mr. Gutman, Recently you inquired about the fire code in regards to the occupant load at Old Pueblo Grill, 60 North Alvernon Way. The occupant load at 60 North Alvernon, a restaurant, is 140 occupants. All occupant loads in Tucson are calculate by a formula and national standard developed by the National Fire Protection Association, and used locally by the Tucson Fire Code. In restaurants, for safety reasons, studies have shown that occupants need 15 square feet per person, which is called an occupant load factor. National Fire Protection Association uses this factor of 15 for (tables and chairs), and divides this into the square footage of the room used for assembly purposes. The answer is the occupant load. Exit locations and exit widths are also considered in the final calculation. Some of the tragic fire emergencies have been in assembly rooms worsened by overcrowding, and the Tucson Fire Department closely monitors all buildings for occupant load compliance. Thank you for your inquiry. If you have questions, or if I may be of any assistance please call me at 791-4502 extension 127. |
