07/31/2018 INSP - INITIAL CODE ENFORCMENT VALDEZ Approved Housing Department requested an inspection on back fed breakers to 4 units due a HUD inspection. The HUD inspector failed the units due to a screw which was installed in the center of the back fed breaker. Inspection results The following units were inspected, unit 2, 11, and 16. These units have Bryant electrical panels which have back fed breakers with a hold down retaining screw. The hold down retaining screw is a manufacture approved type and is code legal. Below is the code section and justification requiring the hold down retaining screw for the back fed breakers. 2011 NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE ARTICLE 408 SWITCH BOARDS, SWITCH GEARS AND PANELS BOARDS III PANEL BOARDS 408.36 OVERCURRENT PROTECTION (D) BACK-FED DEVICES. PLUG-IN-TYPE OVERCURRENT PROTECTION DEVICES OR PLUG-IN TYPE MAIN LUG ASSEMBLIES THAT ARE BACK FED AND USED TO TERMINATE FIELD-INSTALLED UNGROUNDED SUPPLY CONDUCTORS SHALL BE SECURED IN PLACE BY AN ADDITIONAL FASTENER THAT REQUIRES OTHER THAN A PULL TO RELEASE THE DEVICE FROM THE MOUNTING MEANS ON THE PANEL. Manufactures hold down retaining screw is required so that the back-fed breaker cannot be removed in a manner where injury or electrocution may occur. Back fed breakers has live feeders connected directly to them so they are always energized. Report was emailed to the housing office. close case
