06/19/2008 VIOL - FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS EGRIFFIN Violation On June 18, 2008 a breakage in the automatic fire protection system occurred in the remodel project on the south side of this property. According to Mr. John Adams, a representative of TR Lenen, this was a sprinkler head breakage, causing the fire protection zone to be temporarily shut down. After speaking to Jerrod from Kazal Fire Protection, assurances have been made that this system is fully operational. This seems to the latest of a series of disturbances to this required fire protection system. Disturbance of this system is in violation of Tucson Fire code section 901.8, which states; 901.8 Removal of or tampering with equipment. It shall be unlawful for any person to remove, tamper with or otherwise disturb any fire hydrant, fire detection and alarm system, fire suppression system, or other fire appliance required by this code except for the purpose of extinguishing fire, training purposes, recharging or making necessary repairs, or when approved by the fire code official. The City of Tucson Prosecutors Office shall review future disturbances of this system for possible litigation. In addition I wish to review procedure and requirements for out of service fire protection systems. Tucson Fire code 901.7 states: 901.7 Systems out of service. Where a required fire protection system is out of service, the fire department and the fire code official shall be notified immediately and, where required by the fire code official, the building shall either be evacuated or an approved fire watch shall be provided for all occupants left unprotected by the shut down until the fire protection system has been returned to service. Where utilized, fire watches shall be provided with at least one approved means for notification of the fire department and their only duty shall be to perform constant patrols of the protected premises and keep watch for fires. The fire watch shall have ONLY duties of early notification of fires. The fire watch duties shall be those of patrol in the affected areas only.
