The park managers said they arranged for it for fire safety. They have been asked twice if they had a permit or something from the city to say this destruction of desert and habitat was ok. If they do have permission from the city and plan to clean up and smooth out the "fire break" later, fine. There is already a road and wide trails that are 40-50 feet from the homes and the vegetation and trees are green with many "waterways" for water flow from the monsoons.
